The healing power of natural plant oils has been used medicinally for thousands of years.
For example, in Medieval and Renaissance Europe, lavender was strewn over the stone floors of castles for use as a disinfectant and deodorant. It was also one of many medicinal herbs grown in “infirmarian’s gardens,” with yields intended to be used to ward off disease.
Lavender was highly revered during the Great Plague of London in the 17th century, when individuals fastened bunches of lavender to each wrist to protect themselves from the Black Death, and glovemakers scented their stocks of leather with lavender oil to ward off the disease.
Aromatherapy massage combines rich, natural vegetable base oils such as peach kernel, sweet almond and avocado with pure distilled essential oils to create a unique massage oil tailored to your physical and emotional state.
It’s usually a gentle, relaxing form of massage, but you can choose whatever pressure suits your needs.
The warmth created by massage enhances the penetration of oils into the skin where they are absorbed into the bloodstream, promoting the body’s natural immune response.
Aromatherapy massage can help to
- reduce anxiety,
- combat depression,
- enhance a feeling of wellbeing,
- clear the mind and
- get rid of muscular tension and stiffness.
It is particularly useful in combatting auto-immune conditions associated with stress, such as IBS and chronic conditions such as ME, CFS, Lupus and Fibromyalgia, or for those recovering from surgery or life-shortening conditions.
Aromatherapy massage is commonly used as a complementary therapy to oncology treatment and Sarah is fully qualified to create appropriate blends and work gently and safely with people who have a current cancer diagnosis and are undergoing treatment, or those who have recently finished treatment. Using essential oils can help to reduce stress associated with treatment, as well as helping some of the common issues that can be caused by cancer treatments, such as nausea and fatigue.
Our sense of smell is rooted in the limbic part of the brain, closely linked to the part of our brain responsible for processing emotion. Aromatherapy taps into the link between scent and memory, a powerful connection because it was so vital for our survival when we were still cave dwellers, hiding or running away from scary things that might eat us.
You may have noticed how a certain scent can transport you to another world. A custom blend based on your preferences will be mixed by Sarah to ensure you leave smelling of roses (or whatever floats your boat), as well as relaxed, refreshed and ready to face the world.
Treatment length: 30/60/90 minutes.
Please note: aromatherapy massage is not suitable for pregnant women in their first trimester. Most pregnant women may receive aromatherapy massage from their second trimester onwards if consent is obtained. Please inform Sarah if you are pregnant or trying to conceive before booking an aromatherapy treatment.
